Does anyone have any tips for treating eczema in young children ?

my son is 3 and has had mild eczema since being a young baby, when i say mild he has about 10-15 small patches overall, its not extreme and it doesn't seem to irritate him to much except when the dry patches start to crack, but he has started nursery school now and alot of the patches are visible (arms etc) and i know how inquisitive other children are and i dont want him to get a complex about it, the doctor has prescribed a number of treatments in the past but they are not for long term use and when it clears and i stop using the cream on him within a week they come back, im just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to keep it at bay rather than treating it over and over again? any ideas greatly appreciated ?
